Engaging Language Learners: What's next?

Thank you for joining me at Cambridge University Press event! We covered a lot of topics in a short time so below are some additional resources for you to follow up on.

Firstly, here is the presentation, in case you'd like to download it.

You can see the Learning Spaces to the left and you can also download it here.

We talked about recognising and drawing on the affordances of all learning spaces and types of learning they support. You can see some of them below.

I didn't get to show you the "Language Slider". This is a tool that can help you to identify which of the 6561 (!) possible combinations of learning spaces you are using. You can see an image here and you can also use the interactive tool here.

You can read a paper on augmented and virtual reality, with tips for teaching here.

Next, we talked about how to prepare learners for different types of learning. I shared with you the model below and the idea is to apply this to the different learning spaces available to you and your learners and then consider how best to help your learners take advantage of their affordances. You can read more about this process in this article.

Another important aspect of encouraging learners to become confident and skilled in moving between different learning environments is to support them in develop self-directed learning skills. This is a truly important - and often overlooked - aspect of fostering learner autonomy. I showed the model below during the presentation and you can read about it, and ways to teach it, in here

Reinders, H. (2010). Towards a classroom pedagogy for learner autonomy: A framework of independent language learning skills. Australian Journal of Teacher Education, 35(5), 40-55.

All of these topics will be covered from an implementation point of view in our upcoming Teacher Leadership course - a course for teachers who want to move their career up to the next level and better empower their learners. You can read about this on the Teacher Leadership website.
