Monday, March 14th, 2011

Just found out about this interesting conference:

8th ALDinHE Conference: Queen’s University Belfast
“Engaging Students – Engaging Learning”
18-20 April 2011

We are pleased to announce the call for papers for the 2011 ALDinHE Annual Conference.
Whilst this is our 8th learning development conference for professionals engaged in the development of learning within the higher education sector, it is the first to be held under the name of our association. This signifies a change from the previous title of LDHEN Symposium, but whilst the name may have changed, the opportunity for practitioners to share their ideas, perspectives and experiences remains the same.

Our theme for 2011 is “Engaging Students – Engaging Learning”

Autonomy SIG pre-conference event Brighton

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

as posted on Auto-L:

IATEFL Learner Autonomy SIG pre-conference event (PCE)
Friday 15th March,
Brighton, UK

Dear Colleagues,

I’m just sending this notice out on behalf of the event organisers for the upcoming pre-conference event at the conference in Brighton. If you are interested in attending, please register online as soon as you can to secure your place. The full day of engaging activities costs 65 pounds for IATEFL members and 75 pounds for non-members. You can register online using the same procedure as the main conference registration (http://www.iatefl.org/).

The brief blurb is below, but you can read more on the event website (http://brighton2011.wordpress.com/programme/ ) and in this detailed flyer.

Best wishes,

Jo Mynard (on behalf of IATEFL LASIG Committee & event organisers)

Developing learner autonomy – Success stories, constraints, and the role of practitioner research

The aim of the PCE will be to to focus on how to get started and how to improve practice when developing learner autonomy at all levels of language teaching and learning. In a workshop-like setting, participants will share success stories as well as constraints experienced in their own practice. Based on these personal experiences, useful steps and approaches when developing learner autonomy will be discussed and outlined in groups.

At the end of the day, groups will report back the results from the discussions in plenary, and ideas for “good practice” will be outlined. Another result of the day could be the setting up of plans for practitioner research to be carried out when back home and the establishment of support networks in this connection.
One point of departure for the discussions in groups will be selected poster presentations, showing success stories, constraints, or just “puzzles”.

Invited speakers:
Dick Allwright, Lancaster University, UK
Anne Burns, Macquarie University, Australia

At this very practice- and practitioner-oriented event we shall be looking forward to welcoming experienced teachers who want to share their practice with others and find new ways of developing it, as well as novices in the field of developing learner autonomy who are looking for inspiration and support for getting started.
Looking forward to welcoming you next year in Brighton,

Anja Burkert, Leni Dam & Pili Uceira-Diez,
PCE organisers
