Build your own 3D games

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Unity is a 3D game engine, letting you build 3D environments for different platforms, both computer- and browser-based. The full version costs $1500 but there is also a free version available. This will be my summer project! Drop me a line if you have experience with this environment as I’d like to hear from you.

Update: Frederik Cornillie just pointed me to David Neville’s blog, who describes the use of Unity for learning German. Looks very interesting indeed. You can find out more here.

Delivering courses on Facebook

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Facebook has many attractions. At the same time it’s a clunky piece of software. Many of the add-in applications don’t work and integrate poorly with the rest of the site. The potential for a decent educational programme to draw on its features is certainly there, though. Udutu (makers of online course creation software; see here) are now offering a Facebook application that allows you to deliver courses created for online delivery through Facebook. I haven’t tested this yet in practice with an actual class, but it looks interesting.

For more information have a look here. If you’ve used this with a class, drop me a line – I’d be interested to hear about your experiences.

Create mobile learning materials

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

There is a lot of interest these days in mobile learning and regular readers of this blog are aware I’m particularly interested in this. Jane’s excellent directory of e-learning tools lists authoring tools for mobile learning. Most of these seem to be for drill-and-practice type exercised but this can be enhanced through the instructions and the context in which they are used. Has anyone used any of these in class or to support out-of-class learning?
